Baseball Drops Extra-Innings Battle Against Illinois State in Home Finale

The Flames turn their focus to Bradley for their final MVC road series next weekend.

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (22-26-1, 14-7 MVC) closed out its 2026 home schedule Sunday evening at Curtis Granderson Stadium with a 10-inning loss to Missouri Valley Conference foe Illinois State (31-20, 13-11 MVC).

Illinois State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Flames answered quickly in the bottom of the first. Junior Ashton Kampa led off the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch from Illinois State starter Luke Teschke. Junior Thomas Curry would also collect a double of his own before crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Smith to tie the game at 2-2.

The Redbirds pushed across four runs in the middle innings, but graduate student Mark Eddie entered with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and steadied things. The right-hander held the Redbirds quiet over the next four innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out three and not surrendering an earned run.

Illinois State held a 6-2 lead after the seventh-inning stretch before the Flames mounted a rally. Kampa cut into the deficit with his first RBI of the game, lining a shot off Illinois State's Brayden Zilis to bring home junior Vidal Colon from second. Two innings later, with UIC down to its final three outs, Colon crossed the plate again—this time on an RBI single from senior Colin Husko.

In the very next at-bat, on the very next pitch, Kampa crushed a two-run home run 420 feet over the right-field wall to tie the game at 6-6 and send it into extra innings.

After the Redbirds managed to get one run across in the top of the tenth, they secured their win with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom frame to close out the game.

The Flames head into next weekend's play with a spot already secured in the 2026 MVC Baseball Championship, scheduled for May 20–24. With multiple seeding scenarios still in play, UIC enters the weekend tied for first with Indiana State, as both teams sit at 14-7 in conference action.
