Volleyball Drops Saturday Matinee Against Belmont

The Flames aim to bounce back in MVC play on the road next Wednesday at Valparaiso.

CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (4-10, 0-2 MVC) couldn't find it's spark of momentum Saturday afternoon, falling to Belmont (5-8, 2-0 MVC) in straight sets to wrap up its first week of Missouri Valley Conference play.

Sophomore Emma Colombari and freshman Maryam Hussein led UIC's attack with five kills apiece, while Hussein added two blocks and a service ace. Sophomore libero Ava Young recorded 14 digs in the contest.

The Flames battled the Bruins throughout the opening set, pulling even at 8-8 following a Colombari's first kill.  Belmont responded with an 8-0 run, however, and went on to take the first set, 25-14. Hussein recorded two kills and contributed to two blocks, while senior Tamara Kisic added two kills for UIC.

UIC rallied from an 11-8 deficit in the second set, taking a 14-12 lead behind kills from junior Jillian Gibbons, freshman Martina Cerrato and senior Gabi Peter. Belmont answered with four straight points to regain the lead, and the Flames were unable to close the gap despite a block from freshman Nathàlia Souza da Silva and Gibbons that brought UIC within 20-18. Belmont closed out the set, 25-19.

The Flames opened the third set with a pair of points, including a Colombari kill off a set from freshman Paulina Ströh, but Belmont responded with six consecutive points. Colombari led the Flames with four kills in the set, while Gibbons added two, but Belmont finished the match with a 25-10 third-set victory.

The Flames are back on the road to continue MVC play, when they travel to take on Valparaiso (8-5, 0-1 MVC) for midweek match-up Wednesday afternoon. First serve at the Athletics-Recreation Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. first serve. The match-up will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available at UICFlames.com.
