Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at Valparaiso

The Flames are back on the volleyball court Saturday night at Southern Illinois.

VALPARAISO, Ind.  – The UIC volleyball team (4-11, 0-3 MVC) couldn't push it to a fifth and deciding set Wednesday night, falling to Valparaiso (9-6, 1-2 MVC) on the road at the Athletics-Recreation Center to open the second week of Missouri Valley Conference play.

Sophomore Emma Colombari led UIC's attack with a double-double, recording 15 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Sasha Pellettieri added a collegiate-high 10 kills while hitting .412 and collecting six total blocks. Freshman Robyn Ward also set a collegiate high with eight total-blocks, adding four kills.

The Flames battled back from an 11-8 deficit in the first set, using a kill from senior Gabi Peter, two Valparaiso attack errors and a Colombari kill to take a 13-12 lead. UIC continued to answer late, with a Peter kill tying the set at 20-20, but Valparaiso scored the final three points to take the opener, 25-21.

UIC turned a 10-8 deficit into a 15-10 lead with seven straight points midway through the second set, highlighted by kills from Pellettieri and Peter, along with three blocks from junior middle blocker Jillian Gibbons. The set remained tight late, and Peter put the Flames ahead, 24-23, with her fourth kill of the set before Valparaiso responded with the final three points to earn the set point, 26-24.

The Flames turned a 5-3 deficit into an 8-6 lead in the third set, with senior Tamara Kisic supplying two kills and freshman setter Paulina Ströh adding a service ace during the rally. UIC later built a 20-13 advantage before Valparaiso closed to within one at 23-22. Ward and Pellettieri combined for back-to-back tandem blocks to earn UIC a 25-22 set victory.

The Flames battled back from an early 8-3 deficit and later took a 20-19 lead on a Pellettieri kill and a Valparaiso attack error. A Ward-Pellettieri tandem block to tie up the set at 21-21, but Valparaiso scored the next three points to win the match, 25-22.
