Volleyball Falls to Milwaukee in Straight Sets Thursday Afternoon

UIC returns to the court tomorrow at 3 p.m. (CT) to take on St. Thomas.

St. Paul, Minn. –  The UIC volleyball team (0-4, 0-0 MVC) opened the Tommie Invitational on Thursday afternoon with a straight-set loss to Milwaukee (1-3, 0-0 Horizon) at Schoenecker Arena.

Senior Gabi Peter finished with nine kills and two blocks. Freshman Martina Cerrato posted a collegiate-high nine kills and added 10 digs. Freshman setter Paulina Ströh also recorded a collegiate-best 19 assists.

UIC struck early in the first set, scoring on four consecutive points with kills from sophomore Emma Colombari and freshman Francesca Lorenzo to push the Flames to a 9-4 lead. The Panthers managed to tie it up at 18, before taking the first set at 25-21.

UIC built early momentum in the second set, sparked by a four-point stretch led by freshman Elizabeth King. Her service ace, along with a pair of kills from Peter during the run, pushed the Flames ahead 19-14. Milwaukee answered with a 7-1 surge to take a late lead, but freshman Maryam Hussein evened the frame at 21. The Panthers responded once more, closing out their second straight set with a 25-21 finish.

The Flames continued to battle midway through the third set, tying it at 13 off back-to-back kills from sophomore Ana Petrides and Cerrato. Pushing to the latter half of the set, Milwaukee would take a late lead, before kills from Cerrato and Peter would cut the deficit to 21-19, before the Panthers finished the match on a 4-2 run to secure the win.
