Sophomores
A panel of young student-athlete alumni visited with UIC sophomore student-athletes for a discussion titled “What I Wish I Would Have Known Then.” Panelists included Flo Beshiri (Women’s Soccer, 2016), Lexi (Brown) Betcher (Women’s Gymnastics, 2015; 2017), Kyle Hamman (Men’s Soccer, 2017) and Mitch Schulewitz (Baseball, 2017). The group provided several key takeaways and reminders for the current student-athletes including:
- Be bold and put yourself out there
- Reach out to professionals in fields, jobs, or industries you are interested in. Cold calling and social media can be effective tools
- Don’t worrying about feeling confused because everyone is trying to figure something out
- Get out of the athletic bubble and figure out who you are without sport
Juniors
UIC junior student-athletes received a presentation from Sandy Le of UIC Career Services with advice on how to build an eye-catching resume, the importance of transferable skills and the best methods to properly answer interview questions. The group also worked together to answer a few mock interview questions and received immediate feedback from Le and other full-time UIC Athletics staff members.
Seniors
Total package workshop
UIC senior student-athletes received a presentation from Carol Coston and Jamie Vasquez of UIC Career Services to be able to identify their athletic transferable career skills and how to find and prepare for the virtual interview.
