Dayton, Ohio ? UIC used a 17-4 run to open the second half, paving the way to a 63-49 at Wright State Thursday night in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference opener for both schools.
"For the first time our pressure game paid dividends," Head Coach Tim Eatman said following the game. "Tonight, we were able to turn turnovers into easy baskets. We shot over 50% and that is because of our defense."
Wright State shot just 37% (17-for-46) against UIC's pressure defense which forced the Raiders into 24 turnovers.
Kimberly Henry led the Flames (6-8, 1-0 MCC), who shot a season-high 56% (25-for-45) from the field, with a game-high 18 points, while freshman LeKesha Williams added 14 points, going 6-for-6 from the floor.
Up by three, 32-29, at the break, UIC outscored the Raiders (2-11, 0-1 MCC) 17-4 over the first eight minutes of the second half, with six different Flames contributing to the run.
UIC, which broke its six-game losing streak with the win, will look for its first-ever 2-0 start in the MCC on Saturday, Jan. 15, when they take on Butler at 2:00 p.m. EST.
