Women's Tennis Shows Well at Spartan Cup

East Lansing, Mich. - Sophomore Nicole Derouin and the play of doubles' team Karen Liwanpo and Zvjezdana Malesevic highlighted the UIC women's tennis team's weekend at the Spartan Cup hosted by Michigan State University last weekend. Derouin rallied back to capture the Singles A Consolation Bracket title while Liwanpo and Zvjezdana combined to go 4-0 at the tournament en route to the Doubles B championship.

In singles play, Derouin, who fell in the round-of-16 in the Singles A winner's bracket, fought her way through a competitive field in the consolation bracket, winning four-straight matches en route to the title. She wrapped up the championship as Lisa Eidman of Miami (OH) retired due to an injury in the title match.

Liwanpo and Zvjezdana rolled through the Doubles B Bracket as they went 4-0 in the three-day event which concluded with an 8-2 title-match triumph over Eastern Michigan's Amalia Lincaru and Kendra Clark.

Other tournament highlights included, Jacki Farr and Kim Harris advancing to the semifinals of the Double A bracket and Zorica Malesevic advancing to the quarterfinals in the Singles B bracket.

All in all, the Flames totaled an 8-10 singles mark and 5-2 doubles record on the weekend.

Mary Dailey's crew is off for two weeks before getting back into the swing of things on Oct. 27, as they compete in the three-day Marquette Invitational.
