Chicago, Ill. - DePaul continued its reign over the UIC women's basketball team as the Blue Demons rolled past the Flames, 72-58, Saturday afternoon at the UIC Pavilion.
DePaul, which improved to 6-4 on the season with the win, has now won the last 27 meetings between the two schools dating back to 1981. UIC, which suffered its sixth-straight loss, is now 1-8 on the year.
"We had a lot of opportunities tonight," UIC Head Coach Tim Eatman said. "DePaul made the most of theirs and we didn't. When you play a good team - like DePaul - you can't waste opportunities."
Junior forward Lenae Williams drained five three-pointers for a game-high 23 points to lead DePaul. Senior guard Candis Blankson also chipped in 10 points for the Blue Demons (6-4).
UIC senior guard Kim Henry (career-best 13-16 FT) scored a season-high 23 points while teammate Melea Clark added 16 points and five rebounds in the loss for the Flames.
The two squads played close to the vest in a foul plagued first half which saw a combined 27 fouls called and 34 free throws taken. The score was tied, 21-21, with 4:17 remaining in the stanza, but the Blue Demons used an 11-2 run, keyed by seven Williams' points, to take a nine-point advantage (32-23) into intermission.
DePaul expanded its lead early in the second half as a jumper by Williams and a pair of free throws by Briana Fitzgerald ballooned the lead to 13 (36-23). After the Flames would trim the lead to seven (38-31), the Blue Demons put the game away with a 29-6 surge to take 67-37 lead with 5:35 left. Eatman's crew would not give up, but the closest they got was the 14-point final DePaul advantage.
The Flames return to the road next week as they travel to Troy, Ala., to take on Troy State on Thursday, Dec. 28, at 7:00 p.m.
