Box Score
Cleveland, Ohio - The UIC baseball team split its MCC doubleheader with Cleveland State Saturday afternoon, dropping the first outing, 7-2, before rebounding in the second contest, 6-3.
In game one, errors cost the Flames as miscues in the infield led to Cleveland State's first five runs of the game. The Vikings put two on the board in the bottom of the first as an error at second lengthened the frame long enough for CSU to plate a pair.
UIC, however, got to Vikings starter Matt Gourley in the top of the second as Jason Hughes and J.P. Moran notched back-to-back singles, scoring one, before a double by Kevin Nelson scored Moran to knot the game at 2-2.
In the fourth, two more Flames' errors led to three more Cleveland State runs, which would prove to be enough as Gourley kept the Flames off the scoreboard in the final five innings of the game.
Nick Worm suffered the loss to fall to 4-5 for the year as he gave up nine hits and seven runs, including just three earned, while striking out three.
In game two, UIC scored one run in the top of the second for the early lead as Bob Rosinski led off the inning with a single to left field and then scored on a single by Hughes three at-bats later. CSU wasted no time, however, in snatching the lead as it scored a pair in the bottom of the second for a 2-1 margin.
UIC (15-20, 4-3 MCC), however, took the lead for good in the top of the fifth, as Nelson led off the rally with his third home run of the year, a shot to left field. Following a ground out to second base by John Rosner, Eric Duke and Sean McNichols roped back-to-back singles to right field for runners on first and third. A double off the bat of Bob Rosinski scored Duke and then another single to right field by Weber Bowen plated McNichols to give the Flames a 4-1 lead.
Curtis Granderson's ground out to second scored another for UIC and then a double by Hughes to right center scored the Flames' sixth run of the game, which proved to be enough as starter Eric Szalo and Steve Carlson were able to hold off the Vikings (11-18, 3-1 MCC).
Szalo, making his first start of the year, picked up victory number one of the 2000 campaign as he went four a third innings and surrendered five hits and two earned runs while striking out three. Carlson earned his second save of the year as he held the Vikings hitless over the final two and two-thirds innings while striking out a pair.
