Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's tennis team saw its four-match winning streak snapped on Thursday afternoon as they dropped an 8-1 decision to DePaul at the Flames' Outdoor Tennis Facility.
"I knew DePaul was good and to get spanked like this shows us we have a lot to work on before (the MCC Championships)," Head Coach Mary Dailey remarked after the match. "The crowd today was really fantastic, though, and I think it really helped some of our players."
The Blue Demons took quick control of the match, sweeping the three doubles contests. Jacki Farr and Nicole Derouin, who were previously undefeated on the season as a doubles team, fell 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles contest, while Emina Curic and Zorica Malesevic dropped their No. 2 doubles match, 9-7. Alyson Stalzer and Kim Harris, competing in the No. 3 doubles slot, got bounced 8-1.
"I'm disappointed in our doubles," Dailey said of her Flames' tandems that went 0-3 on the day. "I think with Nicole (Derouin) and Kim (Harris) coming back from injuries, the lack of practice time caught up with them a little bit. I expect so much from them. That's why I'm really disappointed."
Things didn't improve much for the Flames in singles play as they dropped the No. 1-4 matches in straight sets. UIC did get strong play out of the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, though, as Zvjezdana Malesevic gave the Flames their lone win with a three-set triumph (6-2, 4-6, 7-5) in the No. 6 singles fray while Alyson Stalzer lost a hard-fought two-hour plus marathon three-set match.
"That what I love about (Alyson). Won or lose you know she is going to fight to the end," said Dailey. "You have to love it. It's the worst feeling in the world to see her lose because you know she is dying on every point."
UIC, which dropped to 7-12 on the season with the loss, have one regular-season match remaining on the 2000 schedule as they welcome Butler to Flames courts on Sunday, April 16, at 10:00 a.m.
