PALOS HILLS - The UIC men and women's cross country teams kicked off the 2000 campaign at their home opener at Palos Forest Preserve in Palos Hills this past Saturday.
The UIC women's team placed third overall with a score of 86 behind meet champion Northwestern (18), Loyola (50), Northern Illinois (87) and Chicago State (144) on the two mile course.
Freshman Jenni Goebel's 10th place finish of 11:41 on the two-mile course was crucial as the Flames edged Northern Illinois for third-place.
Goebel was followed by teammates Moneika Thompson (13th place, 12:03), Jessica Streit (19th place, 12:37), Sarah Teren (21st, 12:48), Kim Brown (23rd, 12:54) and Laurie Swanlund (31st, 15:44).
The men's team finished second to Loyola (20 points) with 35 points.
Sophomore Rich Daubert led the way for UIC with a second-place finish of 21:29 while Chicago State rounded it out with 76 points.
Following Daubert was Joe Marren (6th place, 21:58), Shawn Sullivan (8th place, 22:14), Russ Riberto (9th place, 22:19), Tristan Roche (10th place, 22:33), Danny Smith (11th place, 22:42) and Chris Stanley (15th, 23:19).
UIC will be on the road this Friday as they head down to Peoria to participate in the Bradley Invitational at 5 p.m.
