Bowling Green, Ohio - After a rusty opening to the fall season last weekend, the UIC women's tennis team broke out at the 2000 BGSU Invitational as they claimed seven of the nine flight titles, including all three double championships. It was a true team effort over the weekend with every Flame contributing to at least one flight crown.
Ayca Gumuscu (Flight 2), Zvjezdana Malesevic (Flight 4), Alyson Stalzer (Flight 5) and Karen Liwanpo (Flight 6) all brought home singles titles while the tandems of Jacki Farr and Gumuscu (Flight 1), Nicole Derouin and Kim Harris (Flight 2), and Zorica Malesevic and Stalzer (Flight 3) captured doubles championships.
Highlighting singles action, sophomore Zvjezdana Malesevic remained undefeated on the season (6-0) as she claimed the Flight 4 singles crown with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Tracy Howitt of Bowling Green. Freshman Ayca Gumuscu made her collegiate singles debut a successful one as claimed the Flight 2 championship with a 6-4, 6-4 win versus Kate Weightman of Xavier. Gumuscu also remained perfect in doubles play (6-0) as she team with senior Jacki Farr to roll through the Flight 1 field.
For the weekend, the Flames went 11-7 in singles play, 10-2 in doubles action.
The UIC women's tennis team will now have a week off, before travelling to East Lansing, Mich., October 6-8, to compete in the Michigan State Invitational.
