Box Score

Chicago, Ill. - The UIC volleyball team continued the program's best-ever start to a season on Friday night as they swept UW-Green Bay at the UIC Pavilion 15-6, 15-13, 15-12.

With the win, the Flames moved 10 games over .500, at 12-2, while remaining undefeated in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference with a 2-0 mark. The Phoenix fell to 1-12, 0-2 in the MCC. The victory was also UIC's ninth straight at the UIC Pavilion, a record which dates back to last season.

"I though Green Bay played really hard tonight," Head Coach Don August commented after the match. "I thought there middles did a very good job against us. It was a hard fought match. We played very well, but they just kept the pressure on us."

The Phoenix jumped out to an early lead on the Flames in game one, but sophomore Gina Caneva, who is filling in for the injured Jill Greer, laid down five kills on eight attempts to pace UIC to a 15-6 win.

UW-Green Bay kept the pressure on August's crew in the second frame as Janelle Tomlinson showed off her defensive skills. The middle blocker tabbed four block assists in the game while also adding four digs. UWGB attack errors proved to be its downfall, though, as they committed 11 while converting just 11 kills as UIC prevailed 15-13.

The Flames came out of the break between games two and three on fire and jumped out to a 14-1 advantage. Once again, though, the Phoenix would not go away as they rattled off the next 11 points to pull within two, 14-12. UIC was finally able to put the game away as junior Lynn Clarkson ended the contest with one of her match-high 11 kills.

Junior Vicki Lublow matched Clarkson on the night with 11 kills while also leading the team with 10 digs. Caneva finished the match with seven kills and four blocks with freshman Lindsey Filkins chipping in eight kills and nine digs.

Krystle Lange, who tallied eight kills, led UWGB and a match-high 12 digs in the loss. Tomlinson also was strong, adding seven kills, nine digs and five blocks for the Phoenix.

UIC will look for its first ever 3-0 start in the MCC tomorrow afternoon as they take on UW-Milwaukee (9-3, 1-1 MCC), who lost 3-0 at Loyola earlier this evening, at 4:00 p.m. at the UIC Physical Education Building.
