Volleyball Snaps Five-Match Losing Streak

Chicago, Illinois - University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball coach Don August stopped short of saying that Monday's match against Chicago State was a must-win situation.

The Flames, after all, had dropped three consecutive five-game matches to Horizon League rivals UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay and Loyola.

"Obviously after three five-gamers, we wanted to win (this game)," August said.

August's troops obliged as UIC captured a 30-21, 30-22, 30-18 victory over Chicago State at the Physical Education Building on Monday night to end their five-match losing streak.

August knew that while those matches were tough, his team was tougher.

"Even though we lost, we were feeling good about our competitiveness. It was just a matter of getting a little bit better."

Sophomore Teaha Shepperd led UIC with 10 kills and finished the contest with a hitting percentage of .563. Junior Lara Clarkson finished close behind with seven kills and a hitting percentage of .545.

"It was good to see Lara get in there and rip some balls," August said. "She's been having some really good practices lately.

Monday's match also provided August the opportunity to clear his bench as all 11 of his players saw action.

"It was a great opportunity to get everybody in the match," August said. "And some of the kids hadn't played in awhile."

Freshmen Megan Hoffman and Kristi Herrington each saw significant playing time and made the most of it as both finished the contest with four kills apiece.

"Megan and Kristi have been practicing hard," August said. "They deserved to play."

Other solid performers for the Flames included freshman Dawn Strahanoski (33 assists, 4 service aces) and sophomore Lindsey Filkins (3 kills, 10 digs). UIC also recorded a season-high 11 service aces on the night.

UIC will be back in action on Wednesday, as they will host the Marquette Golden Eagles at 7:00 PM in the Physical Education Building.
