Chicago, Illinois - University of Illinois at Chicago head volleyball coach Don August wasn't sure what kind of attitude his team would bring to the floor against IUPU-Fort Wayne, following the Flames' heartbreaking five-game loss to Loyola on Friday night.
"I was really worried about how we would come out after last night," August said. "Whether we were going to come out flat or good, or whether we were going to come out with some concentration."
UIC's poise shined through as the Flames cruised to a 30-15, 30-25, 30-28 non-conference victory over IUPU-Fort Wayne on Saturday at the Physical Education Building.
With the victory, UIC improves to 11-12 for the season, while IUPU-Fort Wayne drops to 10-11 overall.
August was pleased with his defense, led by the charge of senior outside hitter Vicki Lublow (8 kills, 14 digs) and sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Filkins (12 kills, 13 digs). For the match, UIC totaled 59 digs in three games.
"I thought our defense showed a lot of hustle," August said. "We were making a lot of digs early, I mean we had 27 digs in the first game. I thought they were hitting a lot of real hard shots at us, but we just weren't letting those balls drop."
UIC's digging prowess led to solid attacking opportunities as the Flames hit at an astounding .284 clip for the game. Sophomore outside hitter Teaha Shepperd led the charge with 15 kills (.462) while teammate Gina Caneva contributed nine kills (.471).
Deanna Brown topped IUPU-Fort Wayne with eight kills, while teammates Jenny Miller, Janelle Pollard and Lindsay Brammer each added seven kills.
UIC will be back in action on Tuesday as they will travel to Charleston, Illinois to take on in-state rival, Eastern Illinois at 7:00 p.m.
