Box Score
Lawrence, Kan. - The Kansas Jayhawks scored at least one run in every inning, including eight in the bottom of the first, as they cruised to a 24-2 win over the UIC Flames Tuesday afternoon.
The loss drops UIC to 3-13 for the year while Kansas improves to 9-9. The two squads will meet again Wednesday afternoon when they play a pair of seven-inning games starting at 3:00 p.m.
UIC, which totaled 11 hits in the game, got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first as Curtis Granderson (Lynwood, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) reached on a triple to left center and then scored on Chuck Peters (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) single to center field.
The Jayhawks, however, got to Flames' starter Kevin Ryan (Elmhurst, Ill./York) early, tagging him for seven runs on three hits and three walks in just one-third of an inning pitched. Kansas would plate one more run in the bottom of the first off of rookie reliever Brendan Aubin (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) to take an 8-1 lead.
In the second, Kevin Nelson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) led off with a single to left and moved over to second on a groundout by J.P. Moran (Burlington, Wis./Westosha Central). Nelson Gord's (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) double to right scored Nelson, but that would be the UIC's only two runs of the afternoon.
Kansas put one more run on the board in the bottom of the second for a 9-2 and with seven more runs in the bottom of the third inning the rout was on.
Peters paced UIC on the afternoon with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate while Gord also finished with a pair of hits.
