Columbus, Ohio - The University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team came out for its game on Saturday against Ohio, ready to dictate the tempo of the game, following their three-game defeat at the hands of No. 16 Ohio State on Friday night.
The Flames did just that as they picked up their first win of the season as they defeated the Bobcats, 30-20, 27-30, 30-25, 30-23, in the second round of the Ohio State Invitational at St. John Arena on Saturday afternoon. Ohio drops to 0-2 for the season.
"The talent and the level of play today was a lot more to the level of where we can play as a team," UIC Head Coach Don August said. "We played some pretty solid volleyball today, not great, but pretty solid."
Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Filkins led the charge for UIC (1-1) as she posted eight kills and 13 digs.
"Lindsey Filkins brought a lot of intensity to the match, both today and last night," August said.
Other contributors for the Flames include Lara Clarkson (13 kills, 9 digs), Dawn Strahanoski (52 assists, 13 digs), Teaha Shepperd (14 kills, 11 digs), Lynn Clarkson and (11 kills, 5 blocks).
August also cited the efforts of senior defensive specialist Kim Forster. Forster finished the match with 11 digs.
"Kim Forster made some tough serves and had some good digs and she played a solid back row for us," August said. "She did a good job."
UIC will be back in action later today as they will square off with Tennessee Tech at 4:00 PM CST.
