Peoria, Ill. - The UIC volleyball team ran into a hot team on its home court on Tuesday night as host Bradley swept the Flames, 30-18, 33-31, 30-17, at Robertson Field House.
The victory ran the Braves' winning streak to eight games and it was their school record sixth straight three-game sweep of an opponent. Bradley now owns a record of 8-2 on the year. UIC, meanwhile, dropped its second consecutive decision, evening its record at 4-4 for the season.
The Flames were led by sophomore Teaha Shepperd, who finished the night with a team-high 13 kills to go along with seven digs and four blocks. Senior Vicki Lublow posted 11 digs and sophomore Lindsey Filkins added 10 digs in defeat while freshman Dawn Strahanoski tallied 33 assists.
Bradley was paced by the double-double performances of attacker Stephanie Behrns and setter Samantha Hardwick. Behrns, a junior, recorded 11 kills and 10 digs while senior Hardwick finished the night with 40 assists and a match-high 18 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Jenna Passman also chipped in with a team-high 12 kills and five blocks for the Braves.
Bradley jumped out to an early lead on Tuesday, taking the first game handily, 30-18.
The match then truly came down to the second game in which the Flames held a 28-22 lead late in the frame.
The Braves bounced back, though,tallying eight of the next nine points to pull ahead 30-29. UIC knotted the game at 30-30 on a block by Strahanoski and Clarkson, but Bradley quickly jumped ahead on a ball handling error by Stranahonski. After Shepperd tied things back up with a kill, the Braves closed things out with two straight points including a key block of Shepperd on game point.
"Game two was the match in a nutshell," Head Coach Don August said. "We controlled the entire game until the end. I don't want to say we panicked, but I think we lost some composure."
The Flames were unable to regroup in game three as the Braves closed out the match, 30-17.
UIC will be back in action on Friday as they open up Horizon League play by hosting UW-Milwaukee at the Physical Education Building at 7:00 p.m.
