Chicago, Ill. - Senior middle hitter Gina Caneva (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) was named an Academic All-District Volleyball Second Team selection on Thursday morning.
Caneva, a Horizon League All-Academic team selection last season, holds a 4.96 cumulative grade point average in English. She has been named the UIC Female Student-Athlete of the Year over the last two school years and has had only one 'B' during her career.
"I think it's a well deserved award," UIC head coach Don August said. "There is nobody that works harder than Gina anywhere, at any place or at any time.
"I can't think of anyone that deserves this award more than Gina Caneva."
The Lockport, Ill., native has helped UIC to a record of 19-12 this season, which is the Flames best record since 1993. Caneva, who has missed much of the season with a shoulder injury, has garnered 196 kills on the campaign with a hitting percentage of .273 (196 kills, 66 errors, 476 attacks).
Caneva is currently tied for fifth in UIC history with a career hitting percentage of .257.
UIC will square off with UW-Milwaukee at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening at UWM's Klotsche Center.
