Chicago, Ill. -UIC remained perfect at home this season as they swept an afternoon doubleheader from Horizon League foe Detroit on Saturday at Flames Field.
The Flames (13-28, 5-2) edged the Titans (15-11-1, 1-2-1) in game one, 3-2, then rolled to a 9-0 victory in the second contest. UIC is now 5-0 at home this season.
In the opener, Flames starter Alison Aguilar won her 15th straight league decision, allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work while striking out a season-high 11 Titans.
Detroit got on the board first, as rookie Katrina Klemp roped a shot into left field that got past a diving Michelle Miller. The ball rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Lindsay Roy, who had singled, to score from first to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.
The Flames came right back in the bottom of the frame with a two-run, two-out rally. Alycia Creese drove in both runs with a triple to right field to stake UIC to a 2-1 advantage.
Junior Amanda Rivera added what would later prove to be an important insurance run for UIC in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double.
Up 3-1 in the sixth, the Titans plated a run on a sacrifice fly and had the tying run on second with just one out, but Aguilar slammed the door on Detroit's comeback hopes by fanning the next two batters to preserve the Flames' lead.
Freshman Lindsay Roy was tagged with the loss for Detroit, falling to 7-3 on the year.
In game two, rookie pitcher Brittany McIntyre tossed a complete-game shutout and the Flames offense plated nine runs to lead the way to victory.
McIntyre, who is now 6-12 on the year, scattered six hits on the day and fanned four en route to her third shutout of the season.
It was UIC that got on the board first in this contest as an RBI double by Kristin Cumbo, who went 2-for-3 with a career-best three RBI in game two, in the top of the second plated Nicole Shepard.
The Flames then opened things up in the top of the third inning as five walks and four hits led to six runs and a 7-0 UIC lead.
Rivera started the rally with a two-run single, then four consecutive walks led to two more runs. Cameron Astiazaran and Miller capped the inning with RBI singles. All in all, the Flames sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame.
Detroit threatened to get back into the game in the bottom of the third inning, loading the bases with just one out. McIntyre pitcher her way out of the jam, though, getting a pair of routine ground outs to keep the Titans off the scoreboard.
The Flames tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning on RBI singles by Cumbo and rookie Rebecca Wilson.
Anna Ollgaard (1-2) was the losing pitcher for Detroit.
UIC and Detroit will conclude their three-game series tomorrow afternoon with a single game at 1:00 p.m. at Flames Field.
