Champaign, Ill.- The University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team had their five-match winning streak snapped on Saturday morning, dropping a 6-1 decision to their sister school, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, at the Atkins Tennis Center.
UIC (7-5) was paced by Molly Smith, who posted the only match win on the day for Flames by downing Emily Wang 6-1, 6-4.
Beatriz Cabrera's ten-match winning streak was snapped by nationally-ranked Jennifer McGaffigan in a 6-2, 6-3 loss at No. 1 singles. Cabrera and Corey Steven also had their ten-match doubles streak ended by McGaffigan and Cynthya Goulet at the top spot, 8-4.
Comeback attempts by Iris Jaklin and Corey Steven in singles play were thwarted. After dropping the first set Jaklin won her second set against Brianna Knue, 6-2, but dropped the last set by same score. Steven did her best to extend her final set against Eva Choe but was downed 6-2, 7-5.
Illinois (7-3) swept every doubles match for the doubles point, the first time the Flames have been swept in doubles play since their season-opener at Marquette on January 23rd.
The Flames look to bounce back tommorow against Illinois State in Normal, Ill., beginning at 1 p.m.
