Milwaukee, Wis. - The UIC (10-14, 6-3) volleyball team fell to the Panthers of the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee (14-7, 7-2) Saturday 3-1. The two teams were tied for first-place in the Horizon League after last night's matches.UW-Milwaukee's win keeps the Panthers in a first-place tie with Cleveland State, while the Flames move into third place.
The Panthers got out to a quick start, leading 16-8 until UIC sparked a run to get within three points, but the Panthers answered with five-straight to take the lead and grab the 30-20 win.
UWM came out strong in game two with a14-8 lead. UIC then mirrored game one with a run to get within two points (27-25), yet the Panthers struck back with several kills and finished the game30-26.
With the Panthers knocking on the door to victory, UIC would close the gap at 27-27 in game three on a block by Flames junior Maura McCarthy. UIC's Ambria Springer then gained the lead for the Flames that would give them a 30-28 win.
With an 18-11 lead by the Panthers in game four, UIC pulled within three points, but the Panthers grabbed the 30-21 win to clinch the match 3-1.
UIC was led by junior Julie Popp with 19 digs and sophomore Katarina Nedeljkovic with 12 kills. Junior Ambria Springer added another ten kills and Katie Kozak tallied 42 assists on the night.
UWM was led by Leanne Felsing with 17 kills and 13 digs.
The Flames will play their last road games this Tuesday, October 25th at 7 p.m. versus Bradley and Friday, October 28th at 7 p.m. against Loyola, before returning home for four matches in November.
