Milwaukee, Wis.- Victories by Laura Martensen, Kelly Hyatt and Courtney Eck, along with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, were not enough to overcome a tough UW-Milwaukee squad on the road as the UIC women's swimming and diving team fell to the Panthers, 196-103, at the Klotsche Center on Saturday.
Martensen opened the individual event slate with a victory in the 1000 freestyle, taking the race in 10:57.45.
Hyatt sped to a 50 free win with a time of 25.50. Aisha Williams was not far behind in third place at 25.67.
Eck had a stellar day as the rookie captured the 500 free in 5:21.35. She also placed third in the 200 fly and led UIC in the 400 IM (4:45.59).
Fellow rookie Ashley Simos was also strong in leading the Flames in both the 100 breaststroke (1:11.28) and the 200 breaststroke (2:33.30), placing second in both events.
The 400 free relay team of Andrea Giczewski, Emily Biancalana, Williams and Colleen Dougherty took the event title with a 3:37.13.
UIC Head Coach Paul Moniak was happy with the way his team kept up with a strong league team, particularly on the road and with various injury and illness issues hampering his squad.
"Overall I'm very pleased with how the team raced this weekend, given all the injuries and illnesses we've been dealing with," Moniak said. "The coaching staff is very proud of how we've been stepping up under adverse conditions. We're very happy with the performance today and we know this will give us a great chance to succeed at the Horizon League Championships."
