Chicago, Ill. - The University of Illinois at Chicago baseball squad took advantage of five Chicago State errors, scoring six unearned runs on their way to the 7-3 non-conference victory and doubleheader sweep over the Cougars at Les Miller Field on Saturday afternoon.
Senior second baseman Mike Bruszer led the charge for the Flames, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Bruszer batted 5-for-7 with four RBI in the doubleheader sweep.
With the victory, UIC improves to 7-9-1, while the Cougars remain winless at 0-22.
UIC sophomore pitcher Zach Peterson (2-1) earned the victory for the Flames, holding the Cougars scoreless over six innings, scattering seven hits, while striking out four batters. Chicago State starter Loren Murillo (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars, allowing five runs (one earned) and two hits in one-third of an inning.
UIC was a terror on the basepaths in game two, swiping a Les Miller Field-record, seven steals, surpassing the previous record of five stolen bases, last set against Youngstown State on April 6, 2003.
Chicago State's Alex Hall and Jonathan Sakurai (run) were solid at the plate, both collecting three hits and a RBI.
UIC and Chicago State will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, with a doubleheader scheduled for 12:05 p.m. (CST) at Les Miller Field.
