Chicago, Ill.- The UIC women's tennis team had their home outdoor opener spoiled on Sunday as Long Beach State downed the Flames by a 5-2 count at the UIC Outdoor Courts.
UIC (6-8) fell behind early after dropping the doubles point and couldn't catch up on the singles side, taking two of six contests.
Melanie Humphrey looked sharp in in a 6-0, 6-4 straight-sets win over Sandra Rocha. The win was Humphrey's second in a row after missing two dual matches with a sprained ankle.
Freshman Grace Gill-Morlis looked great in her back-and-forth battle with Alanah Caroll, splitting the first two sets before taking the tiebreaker with a 10-8 victory in the finale.
The defending Big West champion 49ers improved to 10-8 on the year.
UIC is back in action this Wednesday against DePaul at the UIC Outdoor Courts beginning at 2 p.m.
