Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's basketball team came up short versus Wright State Monday night at the Pavilion. Despite a 22-2 run late in the first half to take the lead, UIC fell to the Raiders 69-59. The Flames move to 7-11 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Leading the Flames, junior Jacquay Holmes picked up a career-high 23 points. LaShonda Grant chipped in 13 points and Nicole Rinaldi paced UIC with nine rebounds.
Four Wright State players scored in double figures with Brittney Whiteside leading the Raiders with 16 points and nine boards. Tyanda Hammock and Rhea Mays both added 15 points apiece and Whitney Lewis knocked down 12 points versus UIC.
Netting 50 percent from the field in the first seven minutes of play, Wright State jumped ahead 10-3. Scoreless for four minutes, UIC closed the gap on a trey by senior Chrissy Dizon.
With six minutes remaining in the first half, the Flames turned on the heat, hitting 11 straight points to take the lead. UIC closed the half with a 24-2 run, grabbing a 29-23 advantage at the end of 20 minutes of play.
The Raiders responded in the second half with a 9-0 run, taking a 41-40 lead on a jumper by Steph Cosimar. Trailing by 11 points with less then five minutes left in regulation, UIC sparked on offense.
The Flames cut the Wright State advantage to four points with 1:38 on the clock on a layup by Grant, but a trey by the Raiders turned the momentum and WSU picked up its first Horizon League road win this season, 69-59.
"I am really proud of the team for making a comeback in the first half and was trilled to see Jacquay step up tonight," said head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. "But we need to play consistent for 40 minutes and this has been our challenge all season long."
UIC is set to host Detroit on Thursday, January 26th at 7 pm, followed by a 6 pm match-up against Youngstown State on Saturday, January 28th at the Pavilion.
