Chicago, Ill. - In a non-conference match against Bradley (4-15) Tuesday night, the UIC volleyball team (12-11) notched another victory after sweeping the Braves at the Flames Athletic Center. Senior Ambria Springer led UIC, recording 15 kills and six blocks in the win.
Senior Katie Kozak owned a team-high .375 attack percentage and sophomore Christin Hunt paced the Flames at the net with five blocks against the Braves. Junior Amanda Kenny guided UIC on defense with 16 digs and senior Julie Popp added 14 digs on the night.
UIC came out strong on both sides of the net in game one, recording a .303 attack percentage while holding the Braves to a .000 clip. Trailing 2-1, the Flames tied it at 2-2 before extending the gap to 11 points (25-14) late in game two. Recording a .833 attack percentage with five kills, Springer helped the Flames take a 1-0 advantage (30-16) over the Braves.
Bradley fought back in game two with an early 14-9 lead, but UIC sparked a 7-3 run to trail by one point (17-16). The Braves turned around and produced a 6-3 run to regain a five-point advantage. Trailing 23-18, UIC recorded nine straight points, eventually taking game two, 30-28.
Another comeback by the Flames in game three earned UIC the sweep over Bradley. Down by five (19-14), UIC tied it up with five consecutive points. UIC then pulled away from the Braves, allowing them to only get within three points.
Springer and Katarina Nedeljkovic turned it up on offense, recording UIC's last five kills for the sweep over Bradley (30-25).
UIC steps back into Horizon League action this Friday, Oct. 13 when the Flames meet Loyola at 6:00 p.m. in the "RED OUT" match at the Flames Athletic Center. This marks the biggest home match of the season. The first 100 UIC students (with valid I-Card) attending will receive a RED OUT games T-shirt.
