Chicago, Ill. - UIC volleyball senior Ambria Springer was named to the 2006 AVCA Midwest All-Region Division I team on Friday, announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Springer joins Horizon League players Cheryl Hegemann and Leanne Felsing from UW-Milwaukee, in addition to nine other Midwest Region recipients.
"Ambria is very deserving of this honor," said UIC head volleyball coach Nancy Mueller. "She has grown and matured as a player over her four years with the program and it is wonderful to see her be rewarded for her efforts."
Springer led the Flames this season with 3.84 kills and 1.24 blocks per game. The middle blocker owned a .251 attack percentage and a .425 kill percentage.
The senior helped UIC to its first-ever Horizon League Tournament title match appearance in school history and was named to the all-tournament team with a team-high 46 kills (4.18 kpg), 17 blocks (1.55 bpg) and a .320 attack percentage in 11 games.
Springer was named to the 2006 All-Horizon League squad and was recognized during the season with Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week honors on August 28.
After totaling 46 kills, 20 digs and 17 blocks in three matches at the 2006 Chicagoland Challenge, she was named to the all-tournament team.
Following Springer's four-year stint with the Flames, she ranks first in the UIC Single Season Records Book with 160 total blocks and sixth with 495 kills. The senior also owns seventh place in the UIC Career Records book with 1,221 kills and 85 solo blocks.
Springer notched a career-high 30 kills versus UW-Green Bay on Nov. 4, which was good for seventh place in the UIC Single Match Records Book.
She led the league in points (4.95 ppg) and kills (3.84 kpg), while ranking second in blocks (1.31bpg).
