Youngstown, Ohio - With five regular-season contests left on UIC's schedule this season and a four-game winning streak on the line for the Flames, UIC accepted the challenge versus Youngstown State on the road with a 68-49 win Saturday afternoon.
Junior LaShonda Grant paced the Flames with 18 points and three steals. Jacquay Holmes and Krystal Hugelier chipped in 11 points each against Youngstown State.
Ashlee Russo and Michelle Holmes led the Penguins with 11 points apiece, while Jessica Schloemp led YSU with six rebounds.
Despite Youngstown State leading with a 40 percent from the field, the UIC Flames controlled the first half never trailing the Penguins after the 12:42 mark.
Junior Krystal Hugelier saw her first minutes since she suffered a concussion versus Detroit on January 26th, causing her to miss the last three contests for UIC. Hugelier knocked down a three pointer with 5:59 on the clock to swing the momentum back to UIC's favor and lead 27-23 at the half.
The Flames turned it on in the last 20 minutes of play, shooting 55.6 percent from the field and netting 3-of-7 from three-point land. The Flames hits three straight treys, two from Hugelier, giving UIC a 15-point advantage.
UIC downed the Penguins 68-49, picking up win number eight in conference play and the Flames fifth straight victory.
UIC moves to 12-11 overall and 8-4 in league action, playing one last road game on this four-game away stint. The Flames travel to Dayton, Ohio next Thursday, February 16th at 6 pm.
The Flames then return home to host Butler on February 18th at 7 pm and UW-Milwaukee on February 23rd at 7 pm before wrapping up the season at Detroit on February 25th.
