Baseball Closes Regular Season With Twinbill Split At Wright State

May 21, 2006

Box Score

Fairborn, Ohio- The UIC baseball team closed out the regular season on Saturday by splitting a doubleheader against Wright State at Nischwitz Stadium.

The Flames (34-18, 22-7 Horizon League) rebounded from a 7-4 loss in the first game to dominate the nightcap, shutting out the Raiders (28-25, 17-13 Horizon League) 7-0.

Game 2: UIC 7, Wright State 0

Starter Ryan Martin threw five shutout innings of two-hit work, and Ted Rosinski drove in three runs to pace UIC to a 7-0 win over Wright State in the regular season finale.

Resting five starters in the day's second game, the Flames didn't miss a beat. UIC posted 11 hits, the eighth double-digit hit effort by the Flames in the last nine games, and became the first team to shut out the Raiders all season.

UIC jumped out to an early two-run lead in the first inning. Ben Trotter doubled with two out, followed by a walk to Mark Hallberg. That set up Rosinski, who drove in both runners on a double down the right field line.

Rosinski extended the UIC lead to 3-0 in the fourth, demolishing a Chris Snyder offering well over the right field wall for his second home run of the year.

The Flames broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring four times to extend their lead to 7-0. Ryan Schweikert and Jake Carr hit back-to-back RBI singles, and Jon Brown knocked in two runs on a two-out triple to left center.

Martin struck out two and allowed just one walk in five scoreless frames to improve to 5-1. It was the second straight scoreless start for Martin.

Randy Krick, Jason Foster, and Adam Worthington closed the door on Wright State the rest of the way, combining for four innings of scoreless three-hit relief.

Game 1: Wright State 7, UIC 4

UIC's six-game winning streak was snapped in Saturday's opening game as Wright State pulled out a 7-4 victory.

Wright State led 2-0 after two innings before UIC answered with three runs in the top of the fourth. After Larry Gempp Jr. walked and Ted Rosinski was hit by an Erich Schanz pitch, Bryan Nolte ripped a single into right that scored Gempp and trimmed the Raider lead to one. Nick Rainwater followed with a single to right center that scored Rosinski, and Mark Hallberg gave the Flames a 3-2 advantage on a sacrifice fly to right that allowed Nolte to reach home.

The Raiders tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Justin Parker led off the inning with a double and scored after two consecutive sacrifices.

Wright State then used a four-run sixth inning, capped by Parker's two-run single, to take a 7-3 lead.

UIC closed the deficit to three runs on Justin Johnson's sacrifice fly off of Joe Smith in the seventh, but that's as close the Flames would get.

Nolte finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

UIC will return to Nischwitz Stadium next Thursday for the 2006 Horizon League Baseball Championship. The top-seeded Flames begin play at 7:00 p.m. Eastern/6:00 p.m. Central.
