Chicago, Ill.- The University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team opens the 2006 season hosting the Chicagoland Challenge at the Flames Athletic Center, August 25-26. In addition to the Flames, the tournament consists of DePaul, Loyola and future Horizon League member Valparaiso. The action begins Friday when DePaul faces Loyola at 5:00 p.m., followed by UIC's 2006 debut against Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday, August 25, the Flames kick off the day versus 2005 Horizon League Tournament champion Loyola at 11:00 am and wrap up tournament play in the final match at 7:00 p.m. against the Blue Demons of DePaul.

The Chicagoland Challenge enters its third year of competition. A non-participant in 2006, Northwestern claimed the crown in 2005 and the Ramblers clinched the title in 2004.

The Flames will not be lacking playing experience entering the 2006 season. With all six starters returning, UIC's team chemistry looks to be one of the Flames' concrete threats.

UIC's top five leaders in kills and top four leaders in digs return to the court this year. All-Horizon League honorees, senior Ambria Springer and junior Katarina Nedeljkovic are back in action, along with five talent packed newcomers.

The Flames finished in a third-place tie with Loyola at the conclusion of the 2005 season and were picked to share a second-place spot with the Ramblers in the 2006 Horizon League Preseason Poll.
