Chicago, Ill.- Recording a 2-0 mark in conference play, the UIC volleyball team is off to another great start after topping its first six league opponents last season. After sweeping Butler and Wright State in the Flames' opening Horizon League weekend, UIC is looking to capture its fourth consecutive victory and continue its league winning streak against Youngstown State and Cleveland State on the road, Sept. 29 and 30.
UIC enters this weekend's matches 8-10 overall and 2-0 in Horizon League play. Leading the Flames to a perfect 3-0 mark last week over non-conference Eastern Illinois, Butler and Wright State was junior Amanda Kenny with 42 kills and 49 digs. Senior Katie Kozak paced UIC with a .373 attack percentage, while picking up her second triple-double against Eastern Illinois with ten kills, 44 assists and 21 digs.
On the season, senior Ambria Springer owns a team-high 231 kills (3.5 kpg) and 77 blocks (1.17 bpg). Senior Julie Popp leads the Flames on defense with 258 digs, averaging 4.37 per game and Katie Kozak guides UIC with a .257 attack percentage.
In Youngstown State's (8-10, 0-2) opening conference slate, the Penguins dropped matches to UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay in four games each on the road. In Horizon League matches, YSU owns a .135 attack percentage, averaging 12.5 kills, 15.38 digs and 1.75 blocks per game. In the YSU's two league contests, Ruth Boscaljon leads the Penguins with 26 kills and seven blocks. Cari Leslie powers YSU on defense with 36 digs.
Cleveland State (11-3, 1-1) went 1-1 in their opening Horizon League weekend. The Vikings traveled to Wisconsin for matchups against UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee. The Panthers swept CSU on Sept. 22, but the Vikings bounced back to top the Phoenix in three games the following day. In conference matches, the Vikings own a .190 attack percentage, averaging 14.5 kills, 16 digs and 2.3 blocks per game. In two league contests, Liz Fazio paces the Vikings with 23 kills and Jordan Bateman owns a team-high 20 digs.
Following this weekend's road trip, the Flames return home to host UW-Green Bay on Friday, Oct. 6 and UW-Milwaukee on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Flames Athletic Center.
