Chicago, Ill. - The UIC volleyball team battles at the Blue Raider Bash in Murfreesboro, Tenn. this weekend. Located in Ambria Springer's hometown, the Flames face St. Louis University on Friday, Sept 8 at 4:30 p.m. to open the tournament, followed by a matchup on Saturday against host Middle Tennessee State at 11:30 a.m. and a 7:30 p.m. showdown against Miami (OH).
UIC enters this weekend's tournament 3-5 after sweeping Chicago State at the Flames Athletic Center on Sept. 5. Senior Maura McCarthy picked up a season and team-high ten digs and Springer led the Flames with 12 kills in three games. Freshman Lana Lobdell powered UIC at the net with a season and team-high seven blocks in the win.
On the season, the Flames are led by Julie Popp with 110 digs and junior Katarina Nedeljkovic and Springer have recorded a team-high 102 kills a piece. Springer also paces UIC with 37 blocks, while Lobdell holds second with 27 in eight matches. Setter Katie Kozak guides the Flames with 329 assists and also leads UIC with 15 service aces.
The Billikens (3-3) are looking to break a three-match losing streak after picking up victories in the first three matches in 2006. Last weekend, St. Louis fell to No. 22 Minnesota, Texas A&M and Louisiana State in four games each. On the season, Sutton Lasater leads the Billikens with 70 kills and 23 blocks. Sammi McCloud paces SLU with 57 digs and Chrissy King has recorded a team-high ten service aces.
Middle Tennessee State (4-2) enters its tournament this weekend with high expectations. The Blue Raiders are coming off a five-game victory over Saint Mary's on Sept. 3. In the match, MTSU was led by Ashley Adams with 24 kills. Adams also leads the Blue Raiders on the season with 94 kills and a .282 attack percentage. Alicia Lemau'u paces MTSU with 89 digs and seven service aces. Ashley Asberry owns first place on the squad with 31 blocks.
Miami (OH) (3-4) is coming off a four-game loss to Marshall on Sept. 5. Prior to falling to Marshall, the Redhawks had won two consecutive matches against Belmont (3-0) and Boston College in five games. Emily Schroeder guides Miami with ten service aces, 25 blocks and 101 kills, while Melissa Zenz powers the Redhawks on defense with 112 digs in only seven matches.
After the conclusion of the Blue Raider Bash tournament, the Flames face Northern Illinois on the road, Sept. 12 at 7:00 p.m..
