Dayton, Ohio - A second half surge guided the UIC women's basketball team to its second consecutive Horizon League victory on Saturday afternoon with a 68-46 triumph over Wright State. Senior LaShonda Grant paced the Flames on offense with 16 points.
Grant hit all six free throws and drained two three pointers against the Raiders. Freshman Jessie Miller added nine points, while senior Jacquay Holmes pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Senior Kelly True totaled eight points, hitting 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Jill Hushka tied her career-high five points in only eight minutes of play.
All 13 players scored at least one bucket in the contest and UIC shot a season-high .917 percent from the line.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first ten minutes of play, shooting less than 25 percent from the field.
With a five-point lead at the 2:15 mark in the first half, Wright State got within three points on a layup by senior Brittany Whiteside, but UIC freshman Briana Hinkle answered with a steal and fast break layup.
Tough defense in the final seconds gave the Flames a 25-20 advantage at the half. Miller and Grant paced UIC in the first half with seven points each.
The Flames lit up the scoreboard to kick off the second half, draining 17 unanswered points.
The Raiders hit two treys in a minute and a half at the 11:12 mark to attempt to chip away at UIC's lead, but the Flames continued to dominate defensively, totaling 13 steals in the game.
Shooting 51.6 percent in the second half, UIC picked up its second straight conference victory, 68-46.
The Flames controlled the matchup across the board. UIC scored 25 points on 29 WSU turnovers and totaled 36 points in the paint compared to Wright State's 16.
"The way we came out in the second half is a snapshot of how good of a basketball team we can be," said Head Coach Lisa Ryckbosch.
UIC's bench also played a crucial role in the win with 31 points.
UIC returns to the Chicago area to face Loyola on Saturday, Jan. 20. The matchup between the Ramblers and Flames is set for a 12:30 p.m. start at the Gentile Center.
