Kalamazoo, Mich. - The UIC women's basketball team was unable to turn its luck around on the road as Western Michigan topped the Flames, 51-39, on Saturday afternoon at University Arena.
Sophomore Jessie Miller picked up a team-best nine points, while junior Ashley Hluska pulled down a team-high six boards. Sophomore Cassie Johnson tabbed a season-high six points and totaled five rebounds against the Broncos.
Freshman Shanice Sadler recorded a solid performance for the Flames with a season-high eight points and five rebounds on the afternoon.
Trailing by a couple the first ten minutes of play in the first half, UIC's Johnson tied up the contest on a free throw at the 10:46 mark. Miller eventually gave the Flames a three-point lead (14-11) on a trey.
The Broncos regained the lead on a 9-3 run late in the half, but UIC tightened up on defense and cut the deficit to four points heading into intermission (21-17).
Johnson led UIC after 20 minutes of play with six points and three rebounds. Miller also added three boards at the half.
Western Michigan opened up the second half with seven unanswered points in the first three minutes of play. Scoreless for the next four, Miller ended the drought on a layup with 13:04 on the clock.
The Broncos extended their lead in the final 12 minutes of regulation to snap their two-game losing streak.
Western Michigan was paced by Michelle DeNooyer and Sara Vest with nine points each. Ebony Cleary led the squad on defense with 14 rebounds.
UIC heads to Cancun, Mexico for the 2007 Caribbean Challenge on December 18-19. The Flames will face nationally-ranked LSU and Southern Mississippi in the two-day event.
