Las Vegas, Nevada - The UIC softball team closed out its opening weekend of play in a 3:00 p.m. matchup against host UNLV on Sunday. Despite notching eight hits in the contest, the Rebels' six-run second inning proved enough to guide them past the Flames, 10-6.
Senior Becky Moran, junior Brittany Dixon and sophomore Melissa Marinacci each went 2-for-3 against UNLV. Moran led the team with two runs scored, while Marinacci totaled two RBI. Freshman Brooke Frydendall and senior Liz Jacoby each notched a hit on the afternoon.
UNLV's Sue Bregante (1-0) picks up the win for the Rebels, while UIC's Sarah Clynes moves to 2-1 in the circle.

On a fielder choice by Jacoby, Dixon gave the Flames an early 1-0 advantage. UNLV responded in the bottom of the first with a Kendall Fearn two-run home run.
With the bases loaded, Frydendall crossed home plate in the second inning on a UNLV throwing error to tie the game, followed by a sacrifice fly from Dixon to regain the lead, 3-2.
The Rebels then lit up the bats in the bottom half of the inning, recording six runs on seven hits. After one batter, freshman Chelsea Fuemmeler replaced Clynes in the circle.
Down by five in the third, the Flames refused to go quietly, posting their own offensive burst to cut the deficit to two runs (8-6).
UNLV answered in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer from shortstop Jaci Hull to extend its advantage to four runs (10-6).
In the top of the fourth, Sue Bregante came in to pitch for the Rebels, replacing Shannon Crisp.
Scoreless for the remainder of the game, UNLV earned the 10-6 victory on 15 hits.
Off next weekend, the Flames look ahead to the Palm Springs Classic in California, Feb. 23-25.
