Palm Springs, Calif. - The UIC softball team fell short to Nevada on Friday night at the Palm Springs Classic. With the game tied at 7-7, Wolf Pack first baseman Kristin Stith hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to defeat the Flames.
Junior Mallory Studzinski was 2-for-2 with thee runs scored against the Wolf Pack. Senior Liz Jacoby gave UIC the lead in the third on a grand slam home run. Sarah Clynes was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI and junior Ashlee Ackerman picked up a hit, totaling two runs and one RBI.
Brittany Puzey was 2-for-2 with one run and four RBI. Tyler Shaffer was 2-for-4 with two runs and Michelle Beach, Samantha Bias and Stith each notched a hit and an RBI on the night.
Scoreless for two innings, Nevada took a 3-0 advantage on three hits in the top of the third. UIC answered in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead on a grand slam home run by Jacoby.
The Wolf Pack regained a one-run advantage in the fourth. Kelsey Starr stole home, followed by a Beach RBI single to the shortstop to lead, 5-4.
The Flames knotted it at 5-5 when Ackerman drilled the ball up the middle, sending Studzinski home. Nevada's Puzey belted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth, but UIC responded with a two-run RBI single from Clynes to tie the game for the third time (7-7).
With only one out in the top of the seventh, Stith hit a solo homer down the right field line to top the Flames, 8-7.
Clynes moves to 2-3 in the circle after fanning two batters in 3.0 innings, while Nevada's Jordan McPherson picks up the win.
UIC battles Brigham Young and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 12:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The Flames then wrap up the tournament play against Cal Poly on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
