Chicago, Ill. - UIC softball (16-28, 6-6) fell to Cleveland State (22-12, 5-6) in the series finale at Flames Field on Sunday afternoon, 4-3. Each contest in the three-game series was decided by just one run.
Freshman Brooke Frydendall was 3-for-4 with one run scored. Junior Mallory Studzinski posted a .500 batting average (2-for-4), while junior Nikki Rogers was 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Sophomore Sarah Clynes was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Senior Liz Jacoby picked up UIC's third run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Viking Jessica Burt led the team with a .750 batting average (3-for-4) with two runs and one RBI. Michele Penny tabbed her fourth homer on the season in the second inning. Penny was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Tara Meyer was 2-for-3 with one run and Danielle Young notched a hit and an RBI against the Flames.
Amanda Macenko moves her overall record in the circle to 17-8, while Clynes falls to 12-15 on the season. Clynes fanned four batters in seven innings pitched.
Cleveland State loaded the bases on three straight singles to start the game in the top of the first inning. Young then hit a short fly ball over the shortstop to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
CSU's Penny notched her forth homer on the season on a solo shot to right field in the top of the second inning (2-0).
Frydendall got things started for the UIC offense in the bottom of the second with a hard ground ball that bounced over the shortstop's shoulder. Frydendall then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Chavez drew the walk, followed by a single by Studzinski to load the bases. Rogers cut the deficit to one run on a foul ball to left field, sending Frydendall home on the catch.
Clynes reached second base on an error by the Viking second baseman, followed by a wild pitch to advance to third base. Jacoby knotted the game at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly to left field, sending Clynes home.
Cleveland State took a 3-2 lead on an RBI single from Jessica Burt in the fourth inning.
UIC tied the game at 3-3 on an RBI double from Clynes with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Vikings regained a one run lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI single to left field from pinch hitter Lia Gordon.
Holding the Flames in the bottom of the seventh, CSU completed the series sweep with the 4-3 victory.
UIC steps out of Horizon League action next week to face nationally-ranked DePaul on Tuesday, May 1 at Cacciatore Stadium, followed by a doubleheader against Western Illinois on May 3 at Flames Field. UIC softball will honor seniors Liz Jacoby and Becky Moran prior to the matchup between the Westerwinds and Flames.
