Cleveland, Ohio - No. 2 Cleveland State edged No. 4 UIC, 8-7, in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning to advance to the championship game at Viking Field in Cleveland, Ohio. The Flames end the season with a 20-33 overall record after posting a 2-2 mark in the Horizon League Tournament.
Freshman Brooke Frydendall was 3-for-4 with two runs and a double against the Vikings. Sophomore Melissa Marinacci was 2-for-4 with two runs, one double and one RBI. Junior Mallory Studzinski was 2-for-3 with one run, one double and two RBI. Junior Nikki Rogers picked up one double, one run and two RBI. Junior Brittany Dixon was 1-for-3 against CSU.
Danielle Young was 2-for-4 with one run and three RBI in the win for the Vikings. Christa Coppus was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Michelle Penny was 1-for-3 with two runs. Erica Remshard was 1-for-2 with one RBI.
CSU junior Christina Swierz moves to 5-3 with the win in the circle, while UIC freshman Chelsea Fuemmeler ends the season with a 3-16 record.
Cleveland State took advantage of two UIC errors in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Coppus reached second base on a dropped ball in left field, followed an error at first base on a sacrifice bunt by Burt. Penny gave the Vikings 1-0 advantage on an RBI single. CSU then drew two consecutive walks to load the bases, followed by a two-run RBI single to left center from Young.
UIC shook off the first inning and went to work at the plate in the top of the second. Frydendall started the inning with a line drive double to left center. Marinacci doubled to left center for an RBI, followed by single to third base from Studzinski. Rogers then drilled a two-run RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at 3-3. The Flames took a one-run advantage (4-3) on a fielding error by CSU's left fielder after Dixon popped up to the left side.
After pitching 27 innings in less than two days, Fuemmeler replaced sophomore Sarah Clynes in the circle in the bottom of the second inning.
The Flames tacked on three more runs in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded, senior Liz Jacoby crossed home plate on a passed ball. Studzinski then tabbed her second hit of the game on a double down the right field line for two RBI ans a 7-3 lead.
The Vikings answered and cut the deficit to one run (7-6) on two hits in bottom of the third.
CSU knotted the contest at 7-7 on an RBI single by Coppus in the bottom of the fifth.
The Vikings took its second lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth on an obstruction call at home plate on the UIC catcher. Cleveland State held the Flames in the top of the seventh inning to advance to the title game with the 8-7 win.
