Chicago, Ill. - Despite a season-high 23 points from sophomore Jessie Miller, the UIC women's basketball team fell to Butler on Saturday afternoon, 72-57. Miller shot 87.5 percent from the field, 83 percent from three-point land and drained all four free throws against the Bulldogs.
Butler moves to 12-2 overall and 2-1 in league action, while the Flames fall to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
Miller also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds and totaled a team-high four assists. Sophomore Briana Hinkle added ten points on the afternoon with three assists and two steals.
Freshman Kristin Petrinec was 3-for-5 from the field, totaling a season-high six points. Junior Nikki Grobbecker totaled six rebounds, followed by freshman Shanice Sadler with five.
Four Bulldogs scored in double-digits with Lade Akande pacing the squad with 17 points, followed by Candace Jones (16), Candyce Brown (11) and Brittany Brown (10). Susan Lester owned a team-best 12 rebounds.
UIC hit the first two buckets of the first half (4-0). Butler then posted a 9-2 run, but Miller tied it up at 9-9 on her 21st trey of the season. The Bulldogs doubled their points in the next four minutes with an 11-3 burst (21-11).
Sadler ended UIC's five-minute drought on two successful trips to the free throw line. The Flames chipped away at the deficit, eventually cutting Butler's lead to two points with 5:45 remaining (27-25).
UIC held Butler to zero points in the final three minutes of the first half to only trail by four points at the break (34-30).
The Flames got within three early in the second half, but Butler hit eight straight points to own a 10-point advantage (49-39) with 12:43 on the clock.
UIC got within eight points at the midway point of the final 20 minutes, but that would be as close as they would get as Butler picked up its second Horizon League victory (72-57).
UIC hosts crosstown rival Loyola on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 5:00 p.m.
