Cleveland, Ohio - Despite a late comeback in the second half, the UIC women's basketball team fell to Cleveland State on the road, 66-58, on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Briana Hinkle picked up 19 points, while sophomore Cassie Johnson tabbed a season-high nine rebounds. Johnson also tied her career-high with four blocks against the Vikings. Junior Meghan Hutchens totaled 11 points and added a team-best five assists on the afternoon.
Kailey Klein paced CSU with 21 points, followed by Dominique Butler (14) and Brittany Korth (12). Stephanie Crosley owned a team-high eight rebounds.
UIC started strong offensively with a 13-6 run to begin the first half. Cleveland State answered with a 12-5 burst to knot it at 18-18. The Vikings eventually took their second lead of the game on a three-pointer by Klein with 7:54 on the clock.
Hutchens gave the Flames a one-point advantage with less that seven minutes remaining in the first half on a baseline jumper.
CSU then drained 15 straight points to own its first double-digit lead of the contest (35-22). Totaling 23 of CSU's 39 points, Klein and Butler guided the team to a 14-point advantage heading into halftime (39-25).
Hinkle was 4-for-7 from the field for a team-best nine points after 20 minutes of play.
The Flames turned up the heat to start off the second half, notching eight consecutive points (46-35). Despite a 13-5 offensive burst late in the second half, Cleveland State captured the, 66-58, victory.
UIC falls to 4-9 overall and 2-0 in Horizon League action.
The Flames return to the UIC Pavilion next week to face Valparaiso on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7:00 p.m. CST.
