Chicago, Ill.- Northwestern tagged rookie reliever Mike Bjerke for three runs in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie in the UIC baseball team's 6-3 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Les Miller Field on Friday.
Four straight Wildcat (4-4) hits, capped by a two-run double off the bat of Jake Owens, during the top half of the eighth pushed the visitors ahead after the Flames (4-7) rallied from a one-run deficit in the previous half-inning on Steve McGuiggan's game-tying RBI single.
McGuiggan drove in a pair of runs during the contest, while Devin Melecio also knocked in a run on his first collegiate hit.
UIC starter Mike Kool scattered seven hits in seven innings of work, allowing just two earned runs in a no-decision.
Northwestern starter Eric Jokisch went the distance for the victory, giving up three runs and fanning four Flames hitters.
