Nashville, Tenn.- Jake Carr hit a go-ahead two-run double with two out in the top of the ninth to salvage Grant Kohlstaedt's complete-game gem in the UIC baseball team's 2-1 win over No. 5 Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field on Thursday.
Kohlstaedt went the distance, scattering six hits and allowing just an unearned run to pick up the victory for the Flames (3-4). The senior right-hander struck out five in his first Division I complete game.
Vanderbilt (6-3) scored first with two away in the fourth. With one on and one out a ball hit by Shea Robin was misplayed by second baseman Andy Leonard, allowing Alex Feinberg to move from first to third. Brad French then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Feinberg to score.
The Commodores nursed that one-run lead until the top of the ninth. Steve McGuiggan led off with a bunt single back to the mound and advanced to second following Ty Rubio's sacrifice bunt. Tony Altavilla walked, and Kevin Coddington's groundout moved a pair into scoring position.
That set up Carr, who smashed a double into right field to drive in two and push UIC ahead 2-1.
Kohlstaedt retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
UIC and Vanderbilt play the second game of the four-game set on Friday at 4 p.m.
