Nashville, Tenn.- The UIC baseball team capped its series against fifth-ranked Vanderbilt on Sunday, falling 9-3 to the Commodores at Hawkins Field.
Jake Carr, Ty Rubio and Jason Ganek each drove in a run for UIC (3-6).
The Flames struck the game's opening blow as Carr doubled home Andy Leonard in the top of the first for a quick 1-0 lead.
But Vanderbilt (8-3) would go on to score in five straight innings, beginning with the tying run in the third on a sacrifice fly RBI and followed by a three-run fourth.
With the Commodores holding a 4-1 lead, the Flames tallied two in the top of the fifth thanks to back-to-back RBI hits from Rubio and Ganek that cut UIC's deficit to a run.
Vanderbilt responded with another three-run frame in its half of the fifth to pad its advantage.
UIC starter Mike Kool allowed four runs in four innings of work.
The Flames will host Northwestern in a three-game home-opening series beginning Thursday, March 13 at 3:05 p.m. on the brand new FieldTurf at Les Miller Field.
