Chicago, Ill. - The UIC softball team split on Saturday afternoon against Cleveland State. The series finale is set for Sunday at noon.
UIC (18-25, 9-5) scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning in game one to push the Flames past Cleveland State, 7-1. In a low scoring second game, the Viking recorded two runs in a successful fifth inning to avoid the sweep with a 3-2 victory.
Sarah Clynes was 5-for-6 at the plate with one run and three RBI. Brooke Frydendall totaled three hits on the day with two runs and two doubles.
UIC 7, CSU 1
Clynes (11-13) pitched a four-hitter to help guide the team to a 7-1 triumph in game one. The junior totaled three strikeouts in a complete game.
Clynes was an offensive charge for the Flames with three hits, one run and two RBI. Nicole Robinson totaled a team-high two RBI, while Carly DeMarco was 2-for-2.
Cleveland State took a one-run advantage in the top of the first inning with two outs on a throwing error to second base from Clynes.
Marinacci led off the bottom of the second inning with a single. Frydendall drilled a double deep to right center, moving Marinacci to third base. Marinacci then knotted the game, scoring on a wild pitch by CSU hurler Amanda Macenko.
Claire Donyanavard drove in Frydendall on a single and advanced to second base on a wild throw to first base from the shortstop. Ackerman gave the Flames a 3-0 advantage on an RBI single into left field.
Robinson tacked on two more runs on a two-run single.
Clynes gave the Flames a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run single to the right side.
CSU 3, UIC 2
Despite leading after four innings, the Flames fell to the Vikings, 3-2, in the second game of the doubleheader.
Whitney Orellana falls to 3-7 on the season. The freshman hurler fanned five batters in 4.1 innings pitched. DeMarco replaced Orellana in the circle.
Clynes, Ackerman, Alicia Abbott and Frydendall each totaled two hits, while Clynes and Stephanie Chavez picked up UIC's RBI.
Frydendall doubled to left center to start off the bottom of the second inning. Clynes singled up the middle to drive Frydendall in for the 1-0 lead.
The Flames added a second run in the bottom of the third on a single up the middle from Chavez, sending Robinson home.
CSU's Danielle Young drilled a solo home run to right center in the fourth to cut UIC's lead in half.
Shalyn Adams tied the game for the Vikings on a single to left field in the fifth inning, followed by the winning RBI from Whitney Willard.
The series finale against Cleveland State takes place on Sunday at noon.
