Detroit, Mich. - It took extra innings, but the UIC softball team came alive in the top of the tenth with nine runs to beat Detroit, 11-2, in the series finale at Buysse Park on Sunday afternoon.
Whitney Orellana (5-7) earned the victory in the circle after replacing Sarah Clynes in the ninth inning. Clynes totaled a season-high nine strikeouts in 8.1 innings of work.
Ashlee Ackerman was 3-for-7 at the plate with two runs. Clynes totaled two runs and picked up her 12th home run of the season in the final inning. Brooke Frydendall was 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Ackerman and Nicole Robinson each ripped a single to get UIC's (21-28, 12-6) offense started in the top of the sixth inning. Melissa Marinacci was walked to load the bases. Frydendall drove in Ackerman for a 1-0 lead on an RBI single.
Detroit (10-23, 4-10) answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double from Breana Sesoko to left field, sending Jacqueline Nortman home.
In the top of the eighth with the bases loaded, Clynes hit a hard ball to the Detroit shortstop and reached first base after Kristen Sclater bobbled the ball. Frydendall scored on the error to put UIC up by one run.
Orellana came in to pitch for Clynes.
Ellen Sinclair kept Detroit alive with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to knot the contest at 2-2.
UIC loaded the bases in the top of the tenth inning. Robinson forced a walk to give the Flames a 3-2 advantage with one out.
Jill Perry replaced Short in the circle for Detroit.
Perry then walked Marinacci. Chavez ripped a two-run RBI to left field for a 6-2 lead. In her first collegiate at bat, Orellana blasted a two-run RBI double to right center. Clynes followed with a three-run home run to right field (11-2).
UIC hosts nationally-ranked DePaul on Wednesday, April, 30 at 6 p.m. at Flames Field.
