Chicago, Ill. - A late comeback fell short for the UIC softball team as Wright State tacked on three additional runs in the seventh inning to capture a 9-5 victory in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Flames Field.
The contest concludes regular season play for the Flames (22-31, 12-9).
UIC tangles in the 2008 Horizon League Championship on May 8-11, hosted by Loyola University in Rogers Park. The tournament bracket will be released on Monday, May 5.
Brooke Frydendall was 3-for-4 at the plate with a team-best two doubles and three runs. Mallory Studzinski recorded a standout performance on senior day with three hits and one run.
Sarah Clynes (13-17) pitched 4.1 innings before Whitney Orellana replaced the junior hurler in the circle.
Scoreless in the first, Wright State's (29-24, 13-7) Justine Shilt drove in Kristen Bradshaw on an RBI double deep to right center. Shilt scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield from designated player Allison Cox.
Nicole Robinson singled through the left side to lead off the bottom of the second inning. Studzinski singled up the middle, advancing Robinson to third base. Robinson cut Wright State's advantage in half after scoring on a wild pitch.
The Flames threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs, but were unable to capitalize, leaving three runners on base.
The Raiders broke the game open in the top of the fifth with four runs. Pinch runner Malerie Klinger scored on a fielding error by Clynes. Louie Haney hit a three-run homer to right center to give Wright State a 6-1 lead.
Lauren Brennan ripped an RBI single down the left field line in the bottom-half of the frame, but was thrown out at second base to end the inning.
UIC fought back in the sixth inning, cutting the deficit on a three-run double from Frydendall to right center.
Jamie Perkins added a run for the Raiders in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly deep to centerfield. Jherica Williams made it 9-5 with a two-run shot to left field, marking her 17th home run on the season.
