Chicago, Ill. - Despite a strong performance, the UIC volleyball team fell to top-ranked Penn State, 3-0, in its opening match at the Chicago Classic at Mother McAuley on Friday night.
Katerina Hanackova registered a team-best seven kills. Casie Sullivan totaled seven digs, while Christin Hunt led UIC at the net with two blocks.
Christa Harmotto helped Penn State continue its undefeated season with 13 kills. Megan Hodge was one dig shy of a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs. Arielle Wilson totaled a match-high four blocks.
Penn State coasted to a 25-9 win in set one with a .591 attack percentage.
Tied at 8-8 in set two, the Nittany Lions sparked a 10-5 run to lead 18-12. UIC answered with three straight points to cut the deficit to three. Penn State responded with a 6-3 burst to take a 2-0 advantage in the match (25-18).
UIC kept it close in set three with a .233 attack percentage. The Flames trailed by two points midway through the frame (13-11) before Penn State recorded a 7-4 run. UIC got within two late in the set, but the Nittany Lions clinched their seven straight win of the season with a 25-20 victory.
The Flames face Louisville at 12 p.m. on Saturday. UIC concludes tournament play against in-state rival Illinois State at 5:30 p.m.
