Chicago, Ill. - UIC interim head volleyball coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley announced on Thursday, Jan. 15 that Aubrey Sniegowski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont H.S.) and Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South H.S.) will begin their collegiate careers with the Flames in the fall of 2009 after signing National Letters of Intent this past autumn.
Sniegowski is a 6-foot right side hitter who starred as a prep for Lemont and played on the club level for 1st Alliance.
"Aubrey is a high energy player who is very athletic," said Schumacher-Cawley. "I am looking for great things out of her. We expect Aubrey to compete for playing time and a spot in the starting lineup right away."
Safranek, who teamed with Sniegowski on the 1st Alliance Volleyball Club, is a 6-foot outside hitter who was also a standout for Downers Grove South.
"Kelsey is a versatile player who has played several positions," Schumacher-Cawley said. "She played at a successful high school program, which has given her great experience. We expect her to challenge for a position in the starting lineup."
Schumacher-Cawley noted that the duo's club success together will prepare them to succeed when they arrive on the UIC campus for their rookie campaigns.
"Both players play for the outstanding club team 1st Alliance, which will help them get acclimated to Division I competition right away," said Schumacher-Cawley. "I am extremely excited for these two players to get here. They are great additions to the UIC Volleyball family."
