Bradley 79, UIC 64 Box Score
East Peoria, Ill. - The UIC women's basketball team got off to a slow start in it's non-conference matchup at Bradley on Sunday afternoon, losing the game 79-64.
Bradley (1-1) jumped out to an 11-0 run to open the game, but UIC (0-2) fought back, especially in the second half, when they buckled down on defense and outscored the Braves, 33-31.
"They came out more ready to play than we did," said UIC head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. "I give them a ton of credit, they out `everything-ed' us in the first half in every aspect of the game. They played better defense, played better offense, got more loose balls and out rebounded us. They really took it to us."
"To our kids' credit, we didn't give up. I thought a couple of times we started to make a run, but then we started trading baskets," said Ryckbosch. "You can't make up a 17-point deficit if you score and then let them score and go back-and-forth."
Horizon League Preseason Team selection Jasmine Bailey led the way for UIC with 13 points in the loss, adding eight rebounds, including six offensive boards, three steals and three blocks on the afternoon. The St. Louis native poured in 10 of her points and grabbed five rebounds in a strong second-half effort.
"She's a competitor. I just wish we started the game with that kind of intensity and focus," said Ryckbosch. "Once Jas makes her mind up, she's pretty hard to stop."
Freshman Taylor Foulks played 22 minutes off the bench for the Flames and got the nod to start the second half for her squad.
Making the most of her opportunity, Foulks scored nine points, collected six rebounds, got three steals and blocked three shots in just her second college game.
"Taylor is one of those kids that's just going to get better and better every time she's out there," noted Ryckbosch. "Her effort is always good and she's a very willing student. She's been more aggressive looking for her shot. I expect her to continue to improve and contribute."
The Flames will return to the hardwood on Friday night in Minneapolis, Minn. at the Subway Basketball Classic. On Friday, the Flames will take on Colorado before facing the host school, Minnesota on Saturday.
The game marks a homecoming for three UIC players, as seniors Jessie Miller and Cassie Johnson, along with sophomore Kiara Strickland all hail from the land of 10,000 lakes.
Friday's tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. CST. Audio of the game will be available at www.uicflames.com with Jordan Bernfield calling all the action.
